How to stay in touch with your friends from home when you head off to college

College is one of the most exciting experiences of your life. You get to move away from home, you get to meet new people, and you get to experience what a college education is really like. Most people can’t wait to get into the swings of university life, but there are some downsides. In fact, the negatives are the same as the positive. Moving away from home can leave you feeling homesick, a college education can be stressful and extremely difficult, and meeting new people means that you have to leave your old friends behind. So, how do you get to experience the best of both worlds? This is how you can stay in touch with your friends from home when you head off to college…

Follow in the footsteps of the Sisters

If you’ve ever watched The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, you’ll know that Blake Lively and the gang had a pretty good idea. They found an item of clothing that fits all of them, and each one of them decided to keep it for part of the year and then send it to the next person with a letter outlining what had happened to their lives during that time. While you might not be heading off to a soccer camp in Mexico, you could do the same thing with your college experience. Choose something that can be used by all of you, and then pass it around the group one semester at a time.

Make sure you set up a Facetime date

Although you can text and call your friends at all hours of the day, nothing compares to seeing their faces in front of you! So, make sure that you and your friends set up a Facetime date each week. This could be a Friday evening, a Monday morning, or another date that suits all of you. By making this a permanent addition to your schedule, you are showing each other that you are committed to making your long-distance friendship work. Of course, life does sometimes get in the way, so make sure that you rearrange if you can’t make your specified date.

Plan an annual trip

Most college students get to head home during the holidays, which means that you’ll be able to see your friends in the flesh once again. Although this is always fun, you might want to add something a bit more fun into the mix. Planning an annual trip with your friends from home can be one of the best ways to reconnect and making awesome memories. This doesn’t have to be a round-the-world trip, and can just be something small like a weekend in the city. Stay in an Airbnb, fill each other in on your life adventures, and spend some quality time together.

Visit each other

Why would you not want to visit your besties at their new school? Friendship is all about putting other people before yourselves, and the best way to do this is to pay them a visit in their new school. They can do the same for you, and you can see what their new lives are like. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to ditch your own college experiences. While you might not want to spend your days studying, you can always head to the library with your bestie during the day, and then party all night.
Why lose touch when you go to college? It’s easy to stay in touch.
