How to rock your college experience

The first time you walk through those college doors is a daunting experience. This is the beginning of a whole new chapter of your life, and things are about to change. Hopefully, for the better. However nervous or apprehensive you are about college, it’s important you make the most out of the incredible opportunity you’ve been afforded. You need to make sure you get good grades, learn enough skills to help you find a job, make new friends, attend all of the clubs you can, and so, so much more. Sounds like quite a lot, right? Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can ensure you totally rock your college experience. Here are just some of them.

Do your homework

No, we don’t mean actual homework (although that is important, too). We’re talking about doing some proper research before you pick the college you’re going to spend the next 3+ years of your life at. Don’t just assume that because a college has great accreditations that it’s going to be the right choice for you. Before you start applying, make sure you have a proper look around each of the colleges you’re interested in. What are the food choices like on campus? Try some of the restaurants! What are the people like? Talk to some of them! What is parking like? Is there a lot of walking between buildings? What are the facilities like? What do the dorm rooms look like? Do as much research as you possibly can before you make one of the biggest decisions of your life.

How to rock your college experience

Meet with an advisor

Don’t think you have to do this whole college thing on your own. The most successful people in the world will tell you that you need advice and a mentor along the way; whether that be in college or your career. You should be assigned an advisor when you first start college, so hunt them down in your first week. Find out which classes you should be taking to get the credits you need. Talk through a schedule and plan with them, to make sure you graduate in a timely manner. Find out if there are specific courses or classes you need to take before you move onto the next ones. Seeking the advice of someone who knows what they’re talking about will ensure you totally rock the college experience. And, you won’t find out later down the line that you’re taking classes that don’t account for the credits you need to graduate!

Research your professors

Before you sign up for all of the classes your advisor has recommended, make sure you do a little bit of research on the professors taking them. There are several ways you can do this, including a specific website (RateMyProfessor.com) that will let you know what others think of them. You can also sit in one of their lectures (if they don’t mind) to see what their teaching style is like and whether it suits you. Everyone learns differently and you need to match your professor to your learning style. Some are more hands-on, others just dictate notes at you. Make sure the classes you want to do have the best professors for you.

Take time out

One of the most important bits of advice we can give you, if you want to rock your college experience, is to take some time out. You’ll quickly find both your days and nights are filled with lessons, social events, studying, and perhaps even a part-time job or internship. When you’re putting together your schedule for the week ahead, ensure you block out some ‘me time’ where you do absolutely nothing. You’ll thank yourself when you find you have a few hours to catch up on some reading you wanted to do, have a relaxing bath, or even get in a power nap (all students need power naps).
