There have been many TV shows that have taken over the world. Just take the likes of the sitcoms Friends, Seinfeld, and The Big Bang Theory. Not only have they become some of the most iconic shows on the planet, but they also had some of the highest paid actors in the world thanks to their millions per episode paychecks. However, there is another show that seems to have dominated the entire planet since it was first released back in 2011.
That’s right; we’re talking about Game of Thrones. The fantasy drama is based on the books by George R. R. Martin, and now the characters have been brought to life before our very eyes. It appears as though it’s not just us that gets to enjoy the show – the actors also take home a pretty penny thanks to playing some of the most iconic characters of all time.
Kit Harington as Jon Snow – $1.2 million
Here we have a character who has been one of the leading roles since the beginning of the show: Jon Snow. As well as earning the title of one of the author’s “finest creations” from The New York Times, Jon’s life has also been at the center of many storylines – with his character being the topic of many conversations between fans and viewers over the years.
His character may be described as independent, but Jon has made a number of allies over the years as well as growing close to a character or two in his time. Kit Harington, the man behind the Jon Snow, has become a favorite actor for many all around the world as he has appeared in several theater shows and movies throughout his career. The actor is also one of the top five who get to take home $1.2 million an episode thanks to being classed as their “Tier A” stars.
Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister – $1.2 million
It seems as though Cersei Lannister’s wealth doesn’t just stop at the show. No, the actress who plays the character, Lena Headey, also walks away with no less than $1.2 million per episode. Cersei is the Queen of Seven Kingdoms and she wed Robert Baratheon in an arranged marriage from her father. However, that hasn’t stopped her from having a relationship with Jaime, her twin brother.
It seems as though love really does know no bounds after all. In fact, the pair even share three children together. All the ambition and power she portrays on screen has seen Lena up for a number of awards over the years, including four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. When she isn’t in Game of Thrones, Lena has also been seen in the horror The Purge, and several animated shows such as Trollhunters.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister – $1.2 million
Jaime has been a main character since season one thanks to his ongoing affair with his own sister, Cersei. However, it seems as though he will do anything to keep his secret safe, even if it involves pushing his own nephew, Bran, out of the window after he sees the pair romantically involved. Bran manages to survive but has no recollection of what he saw.
The actor behind the character and all of his storylines is none other than Danish star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. Nikolaj had been acting for many years before he landed a part in Game of Thrones – a role that would catapult him to worldwide fame. It’s reported he is another member of the cast to receive $1.2 million per episode, this was reportedly bumped up for the last season because the episodes are much longer than previous seasons.
Aidan Gillen as Littlefinger – $100,000 – $200,000
Petyr Baelish, or Littlefinger as he is better known, becomes an immediate hit with the fans since his introduction in the first season. However, it isn’t to last. The character does his best to turn many of the families against one another, and even resorts to ending the lives of many along the way.
His story comes to an end after Sansa and Arya join forces to end his life and put a stop to his deceiving ways. Thankfully, Aidan stayed in the show long enough to earn himself between $100,000 and $200,000 per episode.
Conleth Hill as Lord Varys – $100,000 – $200,000
Conleth Hill might have played a recurring character for the first season, but it wasn’t long before Lord Varys storylines took off and he was promoted to one of the leading cast members.
Lord Varys has been seen serving others along the way, but many believe there could be some major storylines for this character in the final season of the show. Only time will tell. At least for now, Conleth is one of the many reported to be taking home $100,000 to $200,000 for every episode of the show.
Rory McCann as The Hound – $100,000 – $200,000
Here we have a character that is feared by many as The Hound is considered to be one of the most skilled fighters in all the land. Team that with his relation to The Mountain, and it seems as though these brothers are a force to be reckoned with.
Many of us believed The Hound was lost for good at the end of season four, but thankfully he made his return in season six, and Rory McCann has been enjoying between $100,000 and $200,000 per episode ever since.
Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont – $100,000 – $200,000
Jorah starts out his time in Game of Thrones as a spy working for Lord Varys, but he soon falls for Daenerys and her ways and begins to follow her instead. As well as saving her life, Jorah rapidly develops strong feelings for his new love.
His time battling to save his new love, as well as fighting off the greyscale illness, has seen Iain Glen become a firm favorite in the show, and the actor is rewarded with $100,000 to $200,000 per episode as a result.
Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy – around $10,000
This character has a huge role in the books as George R. R. Martin often uses Theon Greyjoy to tell his stories. Thankfully, he is just as prominent in the TV series. Theon is initially taken hostage and then spends the next few seasons being pushed from pillar to post as he is captured by many others along the way.
Alfie Allen is the British actor behind the character, but even being part of the main cast wasn’t enough to see him climb out of the “Tier C” characters, and earns around $10,000 per episode as a result.
Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark – around $10,000
It seems as though Bran is in for a rough ride when he is pushed out of the window by his own uncle after he catches Jaime romantically involved with his twin sister. Although is now left crippled from the fall, Bran soon becomes the latest Three-Eyed Raven.
His supernatural powers mean he is a crucial feature in fighting the war with the White Walkers and the Night King. However, Isaac Hempstead Wright only earns around $10,000 an episode for his work.
John Bradley as Samwell Tarly – around $10,000
Sadly, Sam is forced to join the Night’s Watch after his father threatens his life. Although he isn’t the most skilled or bravest warrior, it’s Sam’s intelligence that makes him such a key feature in the battle.
He would have once been in line to become one of the lords of the Seven Kingdoms, but his father’s disapproval at his lack of skills on the battlefield is what sees him train with the others instead. Even so, John Bradley earns himself around $10,000 per episode as it builds up to the final season.
Maisie Williams as Arya Stark – $253,000
Arya is Sansa’s sister and half-sister of Jon Snow. The character became hugely popular with fans in season two when she got to work opposite none other than Charles Dance, playing Tywin Lannister, and has been a fan favorite ever since.
In fact, many have questioned why Maisie is in the “Tier B” actors. For a while, she was receiving between $100,000 and $200,000 per episode and many believe she deserves a pay rise. Some wonder if it’s her young age that has seen her miss out on the bump. Thankfully, season eight saw her bringing in $253,000.
Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth – $300,000
Among the many minor characters inhabiting Westeros, Davos Seaworth may be the most popular. The Onion Knight, as he was known, started out as an advisor to Stannis Baratheon. When Stannis was killed, however, the pirate-turned-knight switched sides, backing Jon Snow first as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch and then as King in the North.
He is now at Jon Snow’s side, as he pledged allegiance to Daenerys. Reflecting his important role on the show, Liam Cunningham deposited $300,000 in the bank for each episode he was in.
Nathalie Emmanuel as Missandei – $100,000
Introduced in season three, Missandei has proven extremely popular with Game of Thrones fans, especially her will they-won’t they subplot with Grey Worm. Originally a slave, Missandei served as a translator thanks to her mastery of languages.
She joined Daenerys’ side when she freed the people of Astapor, and hasn’t left it since, becoming her trusted advisor. In 34 appearances across five seasons – not counting the upcoming season eight – Emmanuel has done a fine job of bringing Missandei to life, earning $100,000 per episode for herself.
Natalia Tena – total net worth of $5M
Natalia Tena is yet another one of the talented actors to have transitioned from the Harry Potter world into the world of Game of Thrones. She played the character of Osha who was a wildling woman traveling with and protecting Bran Stark.
While it is unknown just how much Tena was paid for her time on GOT, she has been able to rack up a decent net worth over her years in Hollywood. As of 2017, the actress was worth about $5 million.
Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth – $100,000 – $200,000
This character first enters the show in season two, but after two seasons is soon bumped up to one of the main cast members – and has remained there ever since.
Although Brienne of Tarth is a prominent character throughout the show, she hasn’t been able to climb into the “Tier A” list of crew. Thankfully, everyone is reported to have received a pay rise before the final season of the show, and Gwendoline will now be taking home between $100,000 and $200,000 as a result.
Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister – $1.2 million
Being part of the House of Lannister means that Tyrion gets to enjoy all the riches that come with being related to the wealthiest families in the land of Westeros. Although the family is filled with power, Tyrion must often fight off the prejudice he receives from being a dwarf. Thankfully, his lovable personality has seen this character win over many others in the show so far as he battles to help everyone he can along the way.
Peter Dinklage had appeared in a handful of movies and TV shows before his time in Game of Thrones, but playing the star has seen a whole new level of fame for the actor. To top it off, Peter was one of the five who were able to negotiate a pay rise from $500,000 per episode up to a whopping $1.2 million as they enter the final season of the show.
Peter Dinklage – total net worth of $16M
We’ve talked about their salaries per episode, but now it’s time to look into some of the GOT actors’ net worths. Peter Dinklage has not only been nominated for multiple Primetime Emmys for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, but he has even won a few, and nagged himself a Golden Globe.
The actor has been around for years, and has masted almost every genre from comedies like Elf to dramas like Nip/Tuck. His lifelong acting career has garnered him a net worth of $16 million.
Natalie Dormer as Margaery Tyrell – $100,000 – $200,000
This character first appeared on our screens in season two before she finally made her departure in season six after her life is ended in an explosion.
Although Margaery was a smaller character in the novels, it seems as though Natalie’s acting skills were able to win over the show who promoted her to a main character. Her time with the series meant that Natalie was often walking away with between $100,000 and $200,000 per episode
Charles Dance – total net worth of $5M
Charles Dance has definitely seen more time onscreen than some of the other GOT actors; in fact, he has been around since the mid-1970s.
His most well-known role probably remains Tywin Lannister but he has also been in The Imitation Game, Gosford Park, and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Over the years, Dance has been able to gather a net worth of about $5 million, and we’re sure his time on Game of Thrones really helped bring that up.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau – total net worth of $16M
This Danish-born actor’s greatest role to date has to be Jaime Lannister, but he’s been acting in the United States since 2001’s Black Hawk Down.
In between seasons of the mega-hit show, Coster-Waldau has tried getting some feature film roles in, appearing in the swords-and-sandals epic Gods of Egypt in 2016 and two crime thrillers – Small Crimes and Shot Caller – in 2017. These big screen roles, not forgetting his hefty Game of Thrones paycheck, of course, have led him to a 2018 net worth of $16 million.
Emilia Clarke – total net worth of $13M
Emilia Clarke is the wonderful actress who starred in Me Before You, but this was after she became a huge star from Game of Thrones. Before she snagged this role, Clarke was relatively unknown in the acting world.
Thanks to her time as Daenerys Targaryen, she is now one of the biggest names in Hollywood. Whether it’s her shining smile or her incredible acting skills, everyone wants to work with her. That’s why she has quickly racked up a net worth of $13 million.
Kit Harington – total net worth of $12M
Kit Harrington is another actor whose career got a huge boost after Game of Thrones. He is Jon Snow, after all, as if you needed to be reminded. Before the fantasy adventure role of a lifetime, Kit actually didn’t have any screen acting credits to his name.
Now, the world probably cannot imagine life without him. His time in the spotlight may have been short so far, but he has still managed to make about $12 million.
Lena Headey – total net worth of $9M
Possibly the most hated character on Game of Thrones, we really can’t imagine Queen Cersei being played by anyone other than English actress Lena Headey.
She first made a name for herself appearing in two fantasy films, The Brothers Grimm and 300, and continued her streak in genre films like Dredd and The Purge. Amazingly, for someone so successful, she only had $5 to her name in 2013, as she nearly went bankrupt following a messy divorce. She has since bounced back, thankfully, with a current $9 million net worth.
Sophie Turner – total net worth of $5M
Sophie Turner may be the infamous of none other than Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers, but she has made quite the name for herself all on her own.
Aside from her time as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, but she will also have her own X-Men movie coming out in 2019. She will reprise the role of Jean Grey in the film in Dark Phoenix. The young actress has already begun to bring in a hefty net worth of $5 million.
Maisie Williams – total net worth of $6M
Maisie Williams is yet another young up and comer in the world of Hollywood. The talented actress will definitely be able to find work once her time on Game of Thrones comes to an end after the series finale in 2019.
She is probably going to be one of the most sought after talents in the business as soon as her schedule opens up a bit. Thanks to her starring role on GOT, she is currently worth about $6 million.
Gwendoline Christie – total net worth of $3M
The six-foot-two English actress actually had dreams of becoming a gymnast, but a back injury led to an early retirement. She went to her backup career in acting, and never looked back!
Apart from playing the tragic figure of Brienne of Tarth, she was also lucky enough to land a role in possibly the only franchise bigger than Game of Thrones – Star Wars – playing Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Since she’s still relatively new to acting, she only has a net worth of $3 million.
Aidan Gillen – total net worth of $8M
One of the biggest veterans on Game of Thrones, Irish actor Aidan Gillen deftly portrays the conniving Littlefinger. He schemes and schemes, until Sansa and Arya Stark finally bring him down.
While Gillen was undoubtedly sad to exit the show he has appeared on for six years, Gillen hasn’t exactly been hurting for other things to do. With a starring role in the sci-fi series Project Blue Book, on top of four other projects in various stages of production, he’ll keep busy – and add to his $8 million net worth.
Natalie Dormer – total net worth of $6M
Aside from her role as Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones, Natalie Dormer was also able to establish herself as Cressida in the last two Hunger Games films.
The British actress has been able to find herself in multiple episodes of various television series, but her two most well-known roles remain from GOT and Mockingjay (Part 1 and 2). Because of her time in the acting business, Dormer has brought in around $6 million and probably has her sights set on much higher numbers in the coming years.
Jason Momoa – total net worth of $14M
Although his stint on Game of Thrones was very brief – appearing in just ten episodes – Hawaiian-born Jason Momoa’s role as the fearsome Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo was certainly memorable.
The big man made prior television appearances, for instance in the original Baywatch’s last few seasons, but he became a household name on Game of Thrones. These days, however, the world knows him better as Aquaman, first in Justice League and then in his own standalone hit film, and he swam his way to a $14 million net worth.
Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark – $253,000
It seems as though Sansa Stark has found her Prince Charming after she meets and falls for Joffrey Baratheon. Sadly, she soon learns of his true colors after he orders for her father’s life to be ended in front of her. Ouch.
While her role might be full of heartache, actress Sophie Turner is reported to have taken home $253,000 for every episode her character appeared in season eight. This is thanks to being a “Tier B” character rather than up with the elites of the show.
Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen – $1.2 million
Daenerys is the Dragon Queen who has featured in the show since the very beginning and now is said to be one of the most popular characters in the series. She is played by British actress Emilia Clarke who has received various nominations for her skills over the years thanks to her many gripping storylines.
As well as playing one of the most iconic characters of the series, Emilia also gets to take home $1.2 million an episode thanks to her pay rise for the final seasons of the show. However, Emilia was already earning a staggering $500,000 before the jump.
Making $48,000 every minute
So, we’ve mentioned some of the series’ regulars and biggest stars, how much they make per episode, and how much they are worth in total. However, have you ever wondered how much one of them makes per minute? Well, it turns out Lena Headey – who plays Cersei – makes quite a bit.
Though she obviously acted for more and definitely dominates every second of her screen time, Cersei only appears in 25 minutes of season eight. That didn’t stop her from earning a whopping $48,000 for each one.
