Things in college that won't matter in the real world

They say college years are the best years of your life, and it’s kind of hard to argue sometimes. This is the time in which you really develop and grow as a person, and form the bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime. But, when you are in college you’re also young and naive, and you’re uneducated as to how the world works just yet. For some people, it’s the first time they’ve ever been away from home, and this can be tough to process.
In many ways, college acts as a precursor to real life, and, while we can learn a lot from the experience, it’s important not to let college life define us. While it’s important to take college seriously, there are so many aspects of it that don’t account for anything in the rest of your life or future career. These are some of the things that seem the biggest deal in the world in college but don’t actually matter in the real world.

Your GPA

So many students obsess over their GPA and spend semesters comparing with other students. The bottom line is that GPA scores are basically irrelevant once you leave college. In fact, they are basically only used by universities to showcase their credentials, and, as such, can sometimes be massaged. For this reason, it is important that you don’t take your GPA grades too much to heart. Getting a C in a subject in your first year isn’t going to have any bearing on your chances of getting a particular job.

Your major

When you’re in college your major seems like the biggest thing in the world; it is also one of the first conversation pieces when it comes to interactions. Well, it might surprise you to know that, when you finish college, basically nobody will care about your major anymore. This isn’t meant in a nasty way, and lots of people you encounter will have done majors of their own. It’s important to understand that you are all going into the world together, and actually, only 27% of graduates wind up working a job related to their degree.

Social circle

You are going to make a lot of friends at college, and a lot of those guys you’re never going to see again after graduation. Yes, there are some friends who you will meet and stay friends with for life, and these will be your best-ever friendships. But, you also need to realize that many of the people you hung out with at college are people you won’t ever see again. You are also going to be making new friends when you head into the working world as well, so this is something to keep in mind.

How you do things

You might have a very individual and unique way of doing things. Perhaps in college, you had great results from doing extra credit, but this might not go down so well at the office. You have to understand that the working world is about being a team player, and this is important. You might have a different way of doing things, and you might like to boost your personal opportunities, but, it’s important to understand that these may not be applicable in the working world.
College is the perfect environment to learn about yourself and find out who you are as a person. There is so much related to college life that will come in useful, but there’s a lot that will basically count for nothing the second you graduate. The important thing is trying to understand what is and isn’t relevant after you have finished college. Hopefully, you will find this list helpful in determining that.
