Alaskan Bush People follows the entire Brown family as they travel around Alaska in the hopes of making a life for their family. Although the Browns have learned how to live their unique lifestyle, it seems as though not everyone is so accommodating when the cameras finish rolling. In fact, there are many facts and secrets about Alaskan Bush People that might just give people an entirely new view on the series.
There are secret riches
Although we are used to seeing the Browns living their lives in the wilderness, it seems as though life wasn’t always this way for the father of the show, Billy Brown. That’s right; Billy was actually born into money thanks to his entrepreneur father.
Tragically, that all changed in 1969. Both his mother and father were involved in a fatal plane accident that left the orphan alone in the world to fend for himself. It seems as though it was goodbye riches and hello wilderness.
Not everyone likes the show
Of course, many reality stars have come under fire over the years for their unique lifestyles. However, it seems as though many local Alaskans have been pretty outspoken about their feelings toward the show.
It looks as though they are unhappy with the way the Brown family portray those living in the area with their over the top behavior. Plus, many are upset there is a lack of local traditional Alaskans featuring in a show that is supposed to show off what life is like in this lesser-known part of the world.
They somehow have Pizza Hut
You might think that living in the wilderness means a life away from the modern luxuries that many of us enjoy, right? Well, apparently that might not be the case after all.
In fact, many of the Browns have often been spotted in the local town, and they have even been pictured with some pretty interesting meals. No, we don’t mean ones they have caught and prepared themselves; the youngsters have been snapped chowing down on a Pizza Hut delivery!
Celebrations are random
Our birthdays can be pretty exciting times of the year, and it can be hard to cram in all that celebrating to one day. So why bother? Why not take a leaf out of Billy’s book and celebrate whenever you feel like it?
The Browns all began to celebrate Billy’s 63rd birthday six months before the actual day. The show reported the family chooses to celebrate whenever they like, but many questioned whether it was a way to boost the ratings of the season.
They’re not all nicknames
As if keeping up with the many members of the family wasn’t confusing enough already, it could be about to get a whole lot worse. Bear and Bam Bam are two of the brothers on the show, but would you believe they aren’t their real names?
No, Bam Bam is actually called Joshua, while Bear is Solomon! The show thought they needed more “wilderness sounding” names. As if they weren’t enough, Rainy’s full name is actually Merry Christmas Kathryn Raindrop Brown. What a mouthful.
There have been plenty of name changes
It’s not just the family members that have had name changes over the years. Before the show aired in 2014, there was plenty of discussion about what it would be called. After many discussions, the Browns finally agreed on The Alaskan Wilderness Family.
However, it wasn’t until just before the show was about to hit the air the family changed their minds and went for the now named Alaskan Bush People. It seems as though things could have once been a whole lot different!
There’s a writer in the midst
Believe it or not, but it seems as though one of the family members has a secret career. Who could it be? None other than Billy Brown. Before he made it as a reality TV superstar, Billy was actually a published author.
The head of the family wrote a novel titled One Wave at a Time that tells the tale of a 16-year-old left to fend for himself after becoming an orphan. It seems as though there could have been a lot of personal influence with this story.
There could be a secret marriage
Mother of the family, Ami brown, has never hidden the fact she would love to see all seven of her children happily married. However, it looks as though she could already to have one to tick off the list. There is a rumor that Bam Bam has already tied the knot.
Apparently, the star met Allison Kagan, a supervising field producer, while filming the show and the couple have since gone on to wed. The family haven’t confirmed the rumor, but they haven’t denied it either.
Not all relationships might be real
It seems as though while some of the relationships on the show might be kept under wraps, others in the limelight might not have as much truth to them as we once thought. Noah began to date Karryna Kauffman in season four of the show.
However, Karryna is also a credited actress and was once a competitor in the 2012 Miss California pageant. Many fans of the show believe Karryna was acting once again during her time in the series.
There have been major arguments
There have been many rumors over the years about Billy and Ami’s relationship with Ami’s family. According to her brother, Billy is the one that has kept them from seeing their relation all these years. However, Ami tells a much different story.
She speaks about how growing up in her house as a child was always tough thanks to the violence in the household. It unclear who is telling the truth, but it looks like Ami’s family aren’t happy to have lost contact for the last 40 years.
They married young
One of the many factors surrounding Ami leaving her family is her marriage to Billy. The pair didn’t just marry young; they married very young. In fact, Ami was only 15 years old when she walked down the aisle in 1979.
On the other hand, the 11-year age gap meant Billy Brown was 26 years old when he became a married man. To top it off, Ami also broke her promise to her family and dropped out of high school to start married life.
There’s been time inside
Two of the Brown family aren’t just used to a life in the wilderness but have also grown accustomed to spending time behind bars.
Billy and Bam Bam were the two Browns that headed inside back in 2014 after the family were found guilty of 60 counts of falsification when it came to their Permanent Fund Dividend applications in Alaska. Plus, the pair were also charged with various thefts that led to 30 days inside as well as a hefty fine to pay.
They thought they were being attacked
Season one of the show was off to a bang in 2014 – literally. The family were forced to call the police after they allegedly heard gunfire around their camp. The Browns all feared they were the victims of an attack.
The police arrived to check out the scene, but couldn’t find any suspicious activity in the area. All they did see were examples of fireworks being let off. Many fans believe this could be an example of the family exaggerating the situation for reality TV. Surely not?
There have been trips to rehab
Oldest sibling of the family, Matt, has had plenty of battles to fight both on screen and in his personal life. Unfortunately, an interview in 2016 revealed the star has battled with his drinking addiction for many years.
Matt admits it started out as a few drinks every now and then, but soon grew to become a major grip on his life. Sadly, the addiction became too much, and Matt ended up checking into rehab to get help to kick the habit once and for all.
They might not be that remote
It seems the family’s old house might not have been as remote as the show had us believe. The Browns have often told tales of how they have been learning to live in nature for the last 30 years and try their best to avoid relying on modern-day luxuries.
However, that could all be one big lie as the house is built just 10 miles outside of a major town in Alaska. As if that wasn’t enough, the town is also filled with plenty of modern-day stores that offer up anything they could need to survive.
They might not even live outdoors at all
Apparently, the Brown family might not even live in a remote house at all! We know reality TV can twist the truth, but would Alaskan Bush People really go this far? Two sources have reported that rather than staying in temporary shelters, the Browns actually reside in the local Hoonah Hotel.
This hotel offers up some pretty luxury accommodation, and witnesses have allegedly seen members of the family leaving the Hoonah late into the night. They wouldn’t be the first…
They might have to move
Although their house location is still disputed, it seems as though the Browns might soon be forced to move anyway. Both Ami and Billy have reported many health issues over the years. Billy regularly suffers from seizures, while Ami lives with arthritis and has been treated for cancer.
These both mean the family might be forced to relocate closer to a hospital in case their conditions worsen in the next few years. Perhaps the show could soon turn into Alaskan City People instead?
Matt was rushed to the hospital
While the rest of the family was busy in California, Matt was left to care for the home by himself. However, it’s here that things took a turn for the worse. The star was growing more and more paranoid about bears in the local area, but accidentally set off one of the deterrents made from black powder.
The explosion resulted in part of his scalp being removed which led to an extended stay in the hospital where his head had to be stapled back together.
The internet isn’t so secret
Gabe is one of the five Brown sons. However, it was a YouTube clip that got the world talking about this youngster. Gabe uploaded a video explaining all about his strange past and what it has been to grow up as an Alaskan bush person, but many wondered how he was able to upload the footage at all.
After all, surely living in the wilderness means there is no access to the internet? Apparently not. It seems as though these kids have just as much access to it as everyone else.
They’re not Alaskan at all
The show would like us to believe that Billy and his family have been living in the Alaskan wilderness for decades, but it seems as though there is more to their past than meets the eye. Billy and Ami grew up in Texas, and Billy even had a previous family before the famous Browns.
The couple then moved around to California and Colorado before settling in Alaska a few years ago. Until then, the Browns appeared to have lived relatively average lives.
Social media frenzy
Gabe isn’t the only one to be posting things on the Internet. The youngest of the Brown family, Rain (or Rainy), posts on social media rather frequently. In fact, the 16 year old has over 72 thousand followers and nearly 430 posts on her Instagram account.
For a family that claims to live in the wild, it may seem strange that the children are still able to have frequent Internet access. For those who look past this fact, they love following the young reality star’s life through pictures.
One thing people started to notice as Rain’s Instagram account took off was that she is certainly not a little girl anymore. Most people tend to go through a bit of an “awkward” phase as they’re growing up, but it’s safe to say Rain has made it through to the other side and is doing quite alright.
Now a teenager, Rain is barely recognizable as she blossoms into a young woman, constantly posting pictures of her life on social media for her fans to follow.
Ami’s illness is under questioning
Many of us have learned that not everything we see on reality TV is the entire truth. Why let the natural storylines come out when you could add in some extra details to spice things up a little? Many have spoken about Ami’s illness on the show.
However, not everyone believes that the star of the show is battling anything as there have been alleged rumors of script rehearsals. While Ami might have been to the hospital for valid health concerns, not everyone is buying that it’s true.
Ami’s complicated relationship with her mom
It’s not just the Brown family who have taken center stage on the show. Ami’s relationship with her mother has also been a leading storyline throughout the seasons. We learned that she has been estranged from her family for years.
It was apparently all thanks to her relationship with Billy. However, some people have questioned why Ami and her mom tried to patch things up after so many years apart. Could it all have been to boost the ratings and get people to watch the show?
Opening up online
Rain has gathered thousands of fans on her social media, but it’s her honesty about her life that has won the teen so many followers over the years. It turns out that everything isn’t always as great as it seems for the youngster.
On her social media, Rain has opened up with her battles with mental health. She says that she has suffered from depression for many years and has to fight against the illness every day. Thankfully, Rain’s honesty won the heart of the internet.
Matt missed the wedding
Matt’s addictions cost him more than just his health. The rest of his family was worried about the effect they were having on his life and wanted to make sure that Matt got the help he needed. Sadly, this had more knock-on effects.
Matt was getting help for his issues when Gabe walked down the aisle. This means that he wasn’t able to be there with the rest of his family for the big day. Matt’s absence is said to have put a significant strain on relationships within the family.
Matt earned a lot for season nine
The Brown family has showcased their humble lifestyle and how they try to live off the land as much as they can. However, their time on the show has earned many members of the family a sweet paycheck.
Matt is one of the many who have allegedly benefited from his time on the show. It’s reported that Matt could have earned up to $250,000 for his appearance in season nine. It seems the fans just can’t get enough of this leading character.
Bear is a director
It might be hard to imagine making a film while living in the woods. Still, if the likes of ‘The Forest’ and ‘The Blair Witch Project’ are anything to go by, then this could be the perfect setting for a horror movie. Bear has taken advantage of his surroundings.
Apparently, Bear loves all things horror-related, including scary films. He set about making his own movie, and reports say that it’s still in the works. Unfortunately, he needs to gather a little more attention before it becomes the real deal.
Bear might have blown their cover
Many people have been searching for clues to try and uncover whether the Brown family has always lived in the wilderness. However, Bear might have undone all their hard work thanks to one video he posted to social media.
Here, Bear spoke about how he spent years watching horror movies when the family lived in California. If this is true, then the children weren’t born and raised in the wilderness as the show states, but they moved there to film the show instead.
They were linked to a missing girl
There have been many strange links connected to the Brown family over the years. However, there was one that left people scratching their heads. Alisha was reported missing when she never returned from feeding the chickens.
Alisha had allegedly been talking to members of the cast before she disappeared, and many thought she might have run away to live with them. Thankfully, Alisha was eventually found safe and sound, but there was never any more mention of the Browns.
What happened to Sabrina?
Many animals have appeared on the show over the years. However, it’s hard to beat the fame of Sabrina, the cow. She waltzed onto the show, where she appeared to become an instant hit with the family as all the children loved the addition.
It was said that Sabrina was supposed to help the Browns live off the land. Now, many believe it was all a lie. Apparently, the family had to be taught how to care for Sabrina, but things didn’t work out, and she went back to her real family.
The truth of the cabin
Backstories help to build up any show. Alaskan Bush People is no exception. So what really happened to their beloved cabin? We got to watch as the family was forced to rebuild their lives after their original cabin was burned to the ground.
Billy apparently stated that the cabin was set on fire by the local government as they accused the house of being on public land. However, Billy later changed his story and said the cabin burned down when they were out of the house.
They have a huge net worth
Many families have built their reputation on reality TV. The Kardashians are one of the many who have built an empire thanks to their show, ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians.’ It turns out the Browns have also benefited from their time on our screens.
Some estimate that the family as a whole is worth a whopping $60 million. The best bit? They also estimate that Ami could be worth $12 million alone thanks to her popularity and the impact she has had on many of her fans.
Ami has an international fanbase
Ami’s health issues teamed with her desire to fight her illnesses have both seen her become one of the most popular people from the show. In fact, Ami has used Alaskan Bush People as a way to promote cancer treatment around the world.
It wasn’t long before people from far and wide sent messages of love and good wishes as they willed the star to return to full health. To top it off, many people also sent Ami money to try and help cover medical expenses.
There have been family fall-outs
Of course, most families have their difficulties, but it seems as though Noah has an issue with his younger sister, Rain. He took to social media where Noah opened up about his true feelings, saying that Rain doesn’t have to worry about “the stressful lives” of adults.
He continued to say that Rain spends her says “playing with her dolls” or “cuddling bunnies” rather than thinking about paying bills or what she is going to eat for dinner. Noah believes that their parents do everything for Rain instead.
Billy was married before
The age gap, the worry of school, and the fact they didn’t really know Billy Brown were all concerns for Ami’s family when they learned their daughter would walk down the aisle with her new partner all those years ago.
It turns out this wasn’t the first wedding for Billy, who married another woman before he met Ami. The couple share two daughters and split shortly before Billy and Ami tied the knot. One of Billy’s long-lost daughters later turned up on the show.
They had to learn fast
Billy and Ami claim there is a good reason they decided to head to Alaska in the first place. The pair claim they have been living in the wilderness for many years after they both decided they were sick of their 9 to 5 jobs in the city.
Apparently, they wanted to change their lives, so they decided to move to Alaska. Here, they allegedly had to learn all the skills they needed to survive in a pretty short space of time as the weather meant that Billy and Ami were isolated on an island for 18 months.
Bear was almost a pirate
Ok, not quite, but he did have to wear an eye patch for a long time after an accident in the woods left Bear injured. His job within the family is to hunt for food, and he had learned how to stalk things and collect food for his family.
Sadly, one hunting trip into the forest saw Bear in the emergency room when he ran into a branch and scratched his cornea. He was left with an eye patch but thankfully went on to make a full recovery.
Gabe was separated from his family
If there is one thing that many of us have seen over the years, it’s how close the Brown family appears to be to one another. After all, it might be tough to grow up in the wilderness and film a show together without everyone getting along.
Unfortunately, Gabe was separated from his family when Ami first learned that she was ill. He had been diagnosed with streptococcal virus, a type of throat infection, and had to stay away from his mom until he fully recovered from his own illness.
Welcoming a son
There have been many reports about what the future could hold for Noah and his new family he has welcomed a son into the world. Elijah Connor was born at the beginning of 2019 after the couple announced they were pregnant in November 2018.
Apparently, Noah and his wife, Rhain, never planned to have a family and thought they would let God decide their fate instead. The best bit? They wanted to welcome their son in the spring as that’s when the animals have their babies, too.
Getting some space
Although Noah and Rhain are still settling into family life and the news of their little arrival was shared on the family’s social media page, it looks as though there could be troubled waters ahead for the new family.
Radar Online states that Noah wants to raise Elijah “as far away as possible” as he doesn’t want his family to have anything to do with his son. For now, only time will tell if Noah has changed his mind and will return to the Wolfpack.
Gabe had two weddings
Gabe and Raquell tied the knot in a legal ceremony on their five-month anniversary. The service took place in January 2019, but this was only the beginning. Gabe said that Raquell always wanted a spring wedding.
Just five months after they first said “I do,” Gabe and Raquell were back at the altar for another ceremony as Gabe wanted to give his wife the day of her dreams. Thankfully, Ami was able to make it to the big day – something that meant a great deal to Gabe.
Another new arrival
It wasn’t long after their second wedding that Gabe and Raquell announced they have more news: they are expecting their first child. Unlike Noah, the couple are said to be expecting their new arrival in November 2019.
The pair told People that they can’t wait to meet their baby in the fall. Amazingly, it turns out the couple was introduced through Gabe’s younger sister, Rain, who is equally as excited about the new arrival to the family.
Billy’s been in the hospital
While many people have questioned Ami’s illnesses over the years, it looks as though Billy is still battling against his own health. There have recently been photos of the father of the family in the hospital, and the Brown family has been giving updates on his health.
They say that Billy had to have surgery in September 2019 and that he was kept in the hospital after he failed to recover as well as the doctors had hoped. For now, it’s unclear whether Billy will be able to continue with the show.
