Choosing the right college is such an important part of the process of getting a great higher education. You might know that you want to go to college, but how do you go about picking the right college for you? Well, there are more and more colleges across the United States that are being formed every year, and many of these are cropping upon former military bases.
The military and schooling seem to go hand in hand, as the Armed Forces are responsible for helping shape many of the men and women of tomorrow. So it stands to reason that a lot of the former bases around the country are now home to universities and colleges. Let’s look at a few of the best, that you might consider adding to your list of places to consider.
Texas State Technical College at Waco
Texas State Technical is a huge college, with 10 different campuses, and the headquarters of the university are at Waco. Specifically, on the site that used to be Connally Air Force Base until its closure in the late ‘60s. The college has a wonderful blend of military-style buildings, and landscape, coupled with more contemporary additions. It’s one of the most popular and successful colleges across the country, and definitely, somewhere you should consider.
University of Maine at Bangor
Of course, the University of Maine has been around for quite some time, without having any kind of military link. However, a few years back, the decision was made to build a branch of the university at Dow Air Force Base. It’s the perfect location for developers who want to build campuses, but don’t have a lot of space to do all the things they need to do. This is a small university that has made good use of the surrounding area.
Owens Community College at Toledo
Toledo, Ohio used to be the home of Rossford Army Depot, but, when this closed back in 1964, the decision was made to turn it into the Campus for Owens Technical College – now known as Owens Community College. The college has thrived over the years, starting out with a student body of just a few hundred, and growing to around 10,000. It’s one of the best community colleges in the country, and a place you absolutely have to check out as soon as you possibly can.
These are just a few of the universities dotted around the country that were built and founded on sites that used to be military bases. All that land being sat there and wasted is a shame, so it’s a good job they made full use of it. More and more ex-military bases should be used for schools and colleges – they have plenty of space, and the layout is excellent. If you are considering going to college, we would recommend you add these three to your list. If nothing else, they have that military link, which adds a little more prestige and historical importance to them. So, good luck, and happy hunting, college is gonna be ace!
