One of “Casablanca’s” most prominent characters, Major Heinrich Strasser, was also played by someone with a strong connection to the wartime tragedies. Conrad Veidt was a strong vocal opponent of the German regime and had to flee the country in the ‘30s alongside his Jewish wife. When cast in the film, he demanded that if he was going to play one of the Germans, he had to be portrayed as villainously as possible.
