The year was 1943 and these 10 men, including the mayor of St. Louis at the time William Becker, were testing out a brand new Army glider. Not long after this picture was taken, the plane departed, the right wing fell off and the aircraft crashed killing all 10 men on board.
Apparently, only days before the mayor took flight, he had joked with a reporter saying, “Gentlemen, you can die only once, and we all must die sometime.”
