Through this new information, Conlogue and Warnasch were able to determine the exact cause of the woman’s demise. As they had suspected by the lesions all over her body, smallpox had taken over, and it’s likely that she entered a comatose state before she eventually succumbed to the disease.
This was suggested, as Conlogue discovered that the smallpox had penetrated her skull and made its way into her brain. This would have made it impossible for her to survive. However, Warnasch still wanted to know why she was buried in an iron coffin.
