Warnasch and his team called the Center for Disease Control (CDC) before they went any further with their investigations. With a body so perfectly preserved, there was a chance that the smallpox disease was still contagious, and this could have had disastrous consequences on them and the rest of New York.

The CDC arrived in their protective gear and took skin samples of the body. Thankfully, they soon learned that the disease was not contagious, and had passed away along with the woman buried beneath the ground.
