In fact, the body was so well preserved that the detectives were sure the body had been mummified. She was still wearing her clothes, her hair was still long and flowing, the comb in her hair was in pristine condition, and the pigmentation in her skin was there for everyone to see. The detectives could conclude from their own observations that the woman was of African American descent, and had indeed been buried in an iron coffin.

However, they were also conscious of the fact that, if the body was much older than they initially thought, they would be out of their comfort zone. Detectives Warren and Saenz often worked on old cases, but never on mummified bodies. They would need the help of a forensic archaeologist.
