In the 1930s the scouts developed the Explorer program as a way to keep older scouts interested in continued participation. Eventually, in 1944, the Ranger award became the highest rank attainable for the Explorers, and it remained that way until the award was discontinued in 1949. It was later brought back to the program in 1998, but it is no longer the highest rank available. Due to the original Ranger award only lasting five years, it is a rare find and highly sought after for collections.
