After the Ranger award was discontinued in 1949, the scouts instituted a new rank system within the Explorer’s program. Explorers could pass through four ranks: Apprentice, Bronze, Gold, and Silver. Silver was the highest rank possible until 1958. Over the course of those nine years the insignia went through two different design changes. The design used from 1949-1954 is considered particularly difficult to obtain in the world of collectors, and therefore a very desirable item to have.
