Coincidentally, Kelly had participated in a self defense course through her workplace just weeks prior to the attack. She took a class with instructor Jordan Giarratano from Fighting Chance Seattle, and what she learned there ended up saving her life. Kelly remembered that Giarratano had taught her that bones and “soft fleshy places” were the most vulnerable, so she started hitting her attacker in the side of the head. When Giarratano, who has taught self-defense for 20 years, heard what had happened, he said it was inspiring and humbling.
