When Saved By the Bell first began the writers had originally intended for the characters Zack and AC Slater to be rivals fighting over Kelly. However, behind the scenes Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Mario Lopez quickly bonded and became close friends.

The writers realized that it was getting difficult to hide that chemistry from their bromance on screen, so they rewrote the characters to become best friends as well. Both Zack and AC, and Gosselaar and Lopez, remained friends from that moment onward.
