During the show’s early stages, producer Peter Engel met with the network executives at NBC to help decide on a name for the show. The network’s president at the time, Brandon Tartikoff, wanted a name that used the word bell, and they had been leaning towards the name “When the Bell Rings.”
However, the name Saved By the Bell was then suggested, which Tartikoff loved, and Engel hated. Engel hoped the name would be copyrighted, but it turned out they were free and clear to use it, and that was that.
