This song has a pretty weird origin story, however awesome the song itself is. Dylan historians maintain that he originally wrote the song about his former girlfriend Suze Rotolo, when he was looking for her in Italy in 1963.
However, if that’s true, it’s even stranger to think that the song was originally released by Joan Baez, who also eventually dated Dylan. She must have appreciated the song’s beauty, even though it wasn’t exactly necessarily about her.
