The project is very important and could potentially save the reserve’s elephants from outright extinction, but how can you tell them and get them to cooperate? It’s not easy. Collaring each elephant, in fact, takes about 30 minutes.
The process begins by sedating them, so they can’t cause too much of a fuss, at which point the collar is affixed around their necks. Seizing the opportunity, the team will also collect various health data markers – like blood and hair – from each elephant.
