The tremendous amount of work done by the park rangers and Charles and his project cannot be understated. Not only are elephants’ numbers at Tarangire National Park not decreasing, but – according to the 2014 “Great Elephant Census” funded by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen – it was one of the few parks in Africa where the population actually increased.

In fact, Charles said, none of the 1,000 elephants his project monitors had been lost to poaching as far as they could tell, although they don’t monitor the male bulls.
