Today, we know the Great Sphinx of Giza as the Sphinx of Giza, or even just the Sphinx. However, it hasn’t always adopted this name.

While standing tall over the Egyptian landscape, it has been called various different names that have all honored its structure and its strength. A text dating back to 1400 BCE calls the creature the “statue of the very great Khepri” – named after the Egyptian god. Since then, it has taken on names such as the “Horus of the Horizon,” “balhib,” and “bilhaw.”
