Many men go through a phase where they want a beard, but as soon as they get the one the itching becomes too much, and they shave it off. It seems as though the Sphinx went through a similar experience.

Experts suggest that during a restoration project in the 14th century BCE, Pharaoh Thutmose IV decided to give the mythical creature a makeover. He gave the Sphinx a beard, but it later fell off as the years went by. Remnants of the beard came now be found in the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities and the British Museum.
