Shooting the movie only took 42 days, and although it takes place in California, filming took place in Salt Lake City, Utah. During that short time, Utah was experiencing quite the heat wave, with temperatures reaching as high as 111ºF on some days. It was so hot that one day Tom Guiry, who played Scotty Smalls, was running around during a scene and became so lightheaded he crashed into a camera man. On the flip side, the one day the heat broke happened to be when they filmed the infamous pool scene. The temperature was only 55 degrees, with overcast skies. If it looks like any of the kids are shivering in that scene, it’s because they were!
