Amid all of the drama, Cooper starred in what was arguably one of his most defining roles, as a retiring sheriff who is determined to save his town from outlaws in 1952’s High Noon. Cooper’s performance received enthusiastic reviews, and an Academy Award for Best Actor (his second after his 1942 win for Sergeant York.)
A young Grace Kelly played his wife in her first major role, and their on-screen chemistry continued behind the scenes, despite their 28-year age gap. Neal was so hurt when she heard about his new affair, that she suffered a nervous breakdown and left Hollywood.
