Apparently, Cooper’s performance in the movie was so impressive, that a communist newspaper in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, decided to use his image to help their cause.
The newspaper ran a story claiming Cooper had given a stirring speech about his admiration for communism. This led the FBI to actually contact their people in Philadelphia to investigate if Gary Cooper was, indeed, holding communist rallies in America, and it generated a 27-page report. In the end, his name was cleared.
