Up until 2006, Austria had been patrolling the River Danube for nearly 50 years, despite the country being entirely landlocked. Sadly, cuts to the budget have seen the military decrease in size until it is now a mere speck compared to its former self. Austrian citizens can sign up with the military at 17 years old, as well as having a conscription period for six months for anyone fit to serve the country. 26,000 personnel make up the military that receives less than 1% of the country’s GDP.
