Scientists found signs of life 7.5 miles below ground, inside the Kola Superdeep Borehole

Although the hole is 7.5 miles deep, it actually didn’t get very close to the Earth’s core. Estimates suggest the Kola Superdeep Borehole only managed to get 0.2 percent of the way through the planet’s crust.

While that doesn’t seem like a lot, it was farther than anyone else had ever gotten, and it was definitely a race the Soviets won against the US. Sure, the Americans had basically given up before the Soviets started, but they persisted far beyond the depth their great rivals had got to.
