Amazingly, in 24 years of digging the Soviets were able to dig 7.5 miles into the world’s crust. It takes marathon runners around two hours to complete 26 miles, and the Soviets seemed to be making the slowest progress in the world.

Just how long it took them is proof of the difficult job they had getting through some of the tough rocks way down below our feet. Despite digging for so long, the hole wasn’t a complete waste of time and science has benefited from the race.
