The Soviet hole is 40,230 feet deep, but in 2012 Exxon Neftegas Ltd dug a longer hole, which measured in at 40,604 feet. While the Kola Superdeep Borehole went straight down, Exxon’s dig began at an angle which means it can be longer while not reaching as deep into the Earth’s crust.

As technology advances, we might see someone else resume digging of the Kola Superdeep Borehole, but for now, and the past 20 years, it’s not getting any deeper.
