Fans of Jules Verne’s novels will be delighted to learn that multiple projects have been trying to get into the Earth’s mantle for decades now. Attempts to reach the mantle – the middle layer between the crust and the core – have been stop-start since the 1960s.

One recent attempt honed in on the Atlantis Bank in the Indian Ocean, where the crust is said to be cooler. The fact that they’re working in a high-density underwater environment hasn’t made things any easier, but scientists are determined to reach the mantle.
