Scientists found signs of life 7.5 miles below ground, inside the Kola Superdeep Borehole

Before the digging began, scientists thought there was a transition from basalt to granite rocks somewhere between 1.5 and 3.5 miles below the surface. What the Soviet dig found was that the transition only occurred a few hundred meters from where they stopped digging.

That sounds pretty technical but what it basically means is that scientists discovered an entire layer of the Earth’s crust simply didn’t exist. What we thought about the Earth before the dig and what we discovered afterward were two different things.
