In the end, the Kola Superdeep Borehole project can be said to have been a failure. Its objective was to reach a depth of more than nine miles, and it certainly didn’t do that despite 24 years of trying. So the question remains – was it a failure?

We believe the answer is a resounding no. With ambition and ingenuity, the scientists achieved something no one ever has – before or since. For that alone, and the incidental discoveries it made along the way, it was an unadulterated triumph.
