Scientists found signs of life 7.5 miles below ground, inside the Kola Superdeep Borehole

Scientists didn’t expect to find any signs of life that deep into the Earth’s crust, but they did. There was nothing still living down that far, but they found the fossils of plankton that were understood to be over 2 billion years old.

From those fossils scientists determined there were at least 25 species of plankton, and if they explored more of the area they could have discovered more still. The organisms were surrounded by organic matter that proved very resilient to the atmosphere down there.
