Drilling stopped in 1983 as Soviet scientists took a break to celebrate reaching the depth of 39,000 feet. Many scientific experiments were done on the findings in the hole, and it wasn’t until after close to a year that drilling started up again.

This proved to be a problem as the drill broke down in 1984 after a large portion of the drill string twisted and broke off. Instead of recovering the debris, it was left in the chamber, and a new branch of the hole began.
