Despite the project’s hardships, the incredible ingenuity it displayed shouldn’t be forgotten by focusing on the scope of it. It had gone deeper than the very deepest point in our oceans – Mariana Trench. To do that, scientists had to invent their tools as they went.

They invented a special drill bit that could work at those depths, which was lubricated by a special mud pumped down through the drill bit, to say nothing of the instruments that had to be invented to take measurements at the bottom of the hole.
