Both sides seemed to think it would be pretty easy to keep digging, but they both ran into issues pretty much every step of the way. It wasn’t as simple as just taking a spade and putting lots of effort into the dig, there was more to it than that. They were discovering that the farther into the world’s crust they made it, the harder the rocks were.
Progress was hard to make, but both sides were not willing to back down as long as they knew the others were still digging. The US began their dig outside of Mexico’s Pacific coast, and it did to enlighten the world about one thing – offshore oil drilling.
